I am an alumna of Indiana University Bloomington, where I studied secondary special education. From there, I spent six years as a high school special education teacher, co-teaching a variety of English, reading intervention, and resource classes. I was born and raised in Indiana, but I spent the past two and a half years in Helena, Montana. Although my husband and I loved being out west, we knew we wanted to return to Indiana eventually, so we moved back and are settling into life in Indianapolis. In my spare time, you can find me hanging out with my husband and two cats, Larry and Pearl. I also love to find new restaurants around town, play board games with friends, ride bikes around town, and relax at home watching movies or reading a good book.
I spent the last two years in Montana. When my husband and I decided to move back to Indiana, I felt like I needed a career change. I knew I wanted to stay in education in some way, and with my background at Indiana University, IU Indianapolis seemed to be the perfect fit. As a special education teacher, we hit workplace readiness and transition services hard—something that I am passionate about. Providing students with resources, guidance, and advice to assist them on their career journey, as well as working with employers, will be a rewarding experience!
My first college work experience was at Noodles & Company in Bloomington while I was an undergrad. I needed a job. Since I loved eating there, I said "why not?" I gained many important skills working there, such as providing effective customer service, multitasking, and managing others while still being a part of the team. The general manager set a good example of what it means to be a leader—not just a boss—and that really stuck with me. I also met my husband, who was an employee there, so I would say it was a pretty good first college work experience.
